Email recovery job

Introduction

The Email recovery job re-generates an Exchange mailbox from the archive. This job is useful when the entire mailbox, one or more folders, or one or more items were deleted, and the user needs to restore already archived items from the archive storage back into the mailbox.

This page describes how the email recovery job reconstructs mailbox content, which filtering and duplicate-checking mechanisms apply, what limitations exist, and how to create a new email recovery job.

How mailbox recovery works

The email recovery job reconstructs the mailbox from the archive: items that were already archived are put back into the mailbox, exactly into their source location. If a folder no longer exists in the mailbox, the job recreates it and tries to preserve the original folder type, provided this information is available in the archive.

Since all filtering options are active for this job, it is possible to recover any part of the mailbox, such as:

  • One folder;
  • Multiple folders;
  • Recursive folder structure;
  • Whole mailbox (structure);
  • Mails older than / younger than / between dates;
  • Different message classes (mails, documents, contacts, etc.).

Duplicate checking

The email recovery job checks for duplicates, so it is safe to run the same job multiple times without creating duplicate items:

  • If there is a shortcut for the recovered mail already in the folder, the mail will not be recovered.
  • If the same mail is already in the folder, it will not be recovered.
  • If the same mail was archived multiple times to the same folder (archive-restore-archive), only the most recent mail will be recovered.
info

Note: Duplicate checking is active only at folder level. Mails without an internet message ID might be duplicated.

info

Note: The recovery technology has the following limitations:

  • Contacts can be recovered only into a contacts folder;
  • Appointments can be recovered only into an appointment folder;
  • Tasks can be recovered only into a tasks folder.
