Email restore job

Introduction

The Email restore job restores original mailbox items from their shortcuts back into the mailbox. This job relocates an already archived item back to its original location, but only if the item was archived using the shortcutting method — that is, a shortcut with matching parameters still exists in the mailbox.

This page explains how the Email restore job evaluates source folders, describes the available restore methods, and provides guidance on scheduling restore jobs.

How the restore job processes items

The restore job considers the age filter and message class filter settings configured for the job. Based on what it finds in the source location (mailbox), the job behaves as follows:

  1. Original mailbox item found: the job does not touch it.
  2. Shortcut with matching parameters found: the job restores the original item to the source folder.
  3. Neither a shortcut nor the original item found: nothing happens, and the source folder remains empty.

Restore methods

The restore job supports two restore methods. The administrator can decide whether:

  • the data is restored to the existing shortcut, or
  • a new item is created and the shortcut is replaced by this new item.

The default restore method can be configured on the Email archive System settings page, under the Email Archive tab → Settings group → System settings button, in the General settings section.

Scheduling recommendations

Restore jobs are run infrequently. It is recommended to either:

  • set a One time scheduler for the job, or
  • start the job manually from the grid.
